Speakers:
*Dr. Melanie Blager of
the Moose Jaw Animal
Clinic – with advice/ideas on handling injured wildlife, specifically
for baby
birds.
*Krysten McEwin,
Executive Director of the
Moose Jaw Humane Society – re: wildlife and the changing procedures and
politics in Moose Jaw within the last year.
Krysten McEwin, the new
Executive Director of the Moose Jaw Humane Society will be speaking
about injured wildlife and the new role the MJHS has with the
City. She is going to touch base on
what their contract is with regards to the city. Since
January 2008, the City is no longer paying them to deal
with wildlife and so now there is no help for injured
wildlife. This leaves the HS in a bad position as people
assume that they should be caring for these animals but without proper
funding it just is out of their means.
Following Krysten's talk (about
25 min), Dr. Melanie Blager of the Moose Jaw Animal Clinic will be
speaking about injured wildlife and bird rescuing (and has a 20 min.
powerpoint presentation). Following, both will answer questions
and Dr. Blager will bring out her adopted Mourning Dove.
Providing Harvey as well as the rest of the group, is OK with this
bird occasionally flying and landing on people's heads.
She tried releasing this dove after caring for it, but it wouldn't
leave!
Nature Moose Jaw
Minutes for January 8, 2009
Notes taken by Vivian
Darroch-Lozowski
1.
Several new persons attending the
meeting were welcomed by Kim Epp.
2. Norma
Going passed a get well greeting
card around for Fred Nash. And we welcomed George Holman back.
3.
Vivian’s minutes from the November
meeting were read and accepted.
4.
Ramsay read the treasurer’s report. The
December balance in the chequing account
is $434.75. He noted that we made $2.86 profit on the Christmas banquet!
5. Larry
and Norma Going reported that we
had 2 new members.
6. No
report from Wakamow Authority this
time.
7. Re
the river-lowering difficulties for
which Nature Moose Jaw had initiated lobbying for change this year:
Margaret
Moran and Kim summarized the city council meeting and the subsequent
meeting
between stakeholders and the city. A dam
is scheduled to be built and a new operating policy will be instituted
in
cooperation with all environmental stakeholders. Joint meetings will be
held
throughout the next months.
8. Bird feeder: Fred
usually fills it.
Until he is well George and Larry will look after that.
9. Green
tips: decals so birds won’t hit windows.
10.
Introducing the shopping bag crocheted
by Sheina from normal grocery plastic bags. A really neat item!
11.
Overview of Christmas banquet, which
was a great success thanks to Kim’s planning.
The banquet opened with
Fern remembering
and honouring the passing of Len, Jim
and Muriel. Then we participated in sharing good food, door prizes for
everyone,
slides from members, and carol sing. Thank you, Kim!
Also noted: Larry Going will have an
exhibition of his wildlife photos at the Cultural Centre beginning
January
18/19, 2009.
12.
Sheina and Margaret agreed to
co-ordinate the lunch committee.
13.
Sightings: a merlin, great horned owls,
ravens and snowshoe hares that may have been jack rabbits.
Also, apparently unusual doves (Eurasian Collared???)
are wintering in Moose Jaw.
14. Kim raised the possibility of a spring garage
sale to
raise funds for
us. This is tabled for another meeting
closer to spring.
15.
Donations of 50 dollars each will be
made to Nature Saskatchewan
in memory of Len, Jim, and Muriel. This was moved by Marge and seconded
by
Russ. The motion passed unanimously.
16.
Sheina Wait gave an informing
mini-teaching about red polls accompanied by her beautiful bird slides.
17. GUEST SPEAKER: Mr. LORNE SCOTT. Lorne
spoke of his personal history in many
conservation movements: with birds, with grasslands, with other
wildlife, and
in government. The background and details and accomplishments of these
kinds
of works, formally and informally, were enlightening to all. Lorne said
his
life had been lucky. We were left with the impression of a generous
gentleman
possessing much initiative and care for the rights of nature, who has
led
fulfilling decades and is catching his breath for his next phase of
contributions to conservancy.
December 19,
2008
Our
annual Christmas Banquet was held at the Timothy Eaton
Centre.
November 14, 2008
We began with a moment of
silence in memory
of Mr. Jim Young who was a loyal, contributing member to Nature Moose
Jaw. His
passing has left sadness in its wake.
A card
for wishes for recovery was signed
by members for Muriel Mayer, whose
condition is still serious.
Visitor,
Brett Ross, grandson of Ramsay
Ross was introduced and he took the role of an animated participant
during the
presentation of the guest speaker.
Norma
Going read the minutes from the last
meeting and they were approved.
Ramsay
Ross read the treasurer’s report:
It was
noted memberships are paid in June.
This month’s “green
moment” focused on shade grown coffee and
flashlights
that turn on by cranking a handle.
Kim Epp read the letter
that she had
written to city council on Nature Moose Jaw’s behalf with respect to
the annual
river lowering. Then, Vivian summarized the submission that she would
make to
the council at their meeting on November 17.
Kim
reported about the plan to band beaver
trees and that if/when it is implemented she would seek volunteers from
several
organizations.
She also
described the Christmas banquet to
be held on December 19th and
encouraged members to bring slides, pictures, etc. to share.
Kim also reported the
good news that she
had received a 500 dollar grant from Nature Saskatchewan. This money will be
used for
seed for the feeder in the Wakamow and also to offset the cost of the
new
projector purchased this autumn.
Ron
Silvers gave a report of the Nature MJ
night hike that had taken place on October 17 with 5 participants,
including
one from Japan.
This hike was 2 ½ hours and was of great pleasure to everyone:
beavers, geese
flying high against a full moon, owls near the parking lot, and Kim
demonstrating how night vision in animals works.
Guest speaker Dr.
Mark Brigham spoke on “bats”. The secretary can’t summarize all his
mesmerizing
details and research about these amazing little creatures. He has
certainly
accomplished a lot, bringing into international awareness the bat
colonies of
our Cypress Hills.
October
10, 2008

Update
on lowering the Moose Jaw
River: A meeting was
held Thursday Oct 9 between our president
Kim Epp, Wakamow
Valley Authority representative Margaret Moran, and Saskatchewan
Wildlife
representatives. Kim is to write a
letter to the City of Moose
Jaw Council objecting to lowering the river
level, and
explaining the negative impact this has on the river’s wildlife and
ecosystem.
Christmas
Banquet: A
planning committee is needed. No
volunteers at this time.
Sighting
of Birds: blue
heron and western grebes at old Wild Animal
Park, pine
siskins,
juncos, and lesser yellowlegs at Besant. Many snow geese spotted.
Green
Moment: Kim
displayed a package of nature-friendly
coffee that can be purchased at Superstore.
Waterfront
Buffer Zones book
was presented for viewing and/or purchase. The
book tells how to develop and protect lake shoreline
buffer zones.
A spring
talk about wasps
was requested by one of our members. Kim
will try to arrange this.
Beavers
are being shot by
a “Predation Officer” hired by the City of Moose Jaw. Larry
Going presented the motion: “That the
members and executive of Nature
Moose Jaw are opposed to the City of Moose Jaw’s Animal Control Officer
shooting any wildlife,
including beavers and coyotes, or trapping such, other than live
trapping,
unless no other means is feasible. Further,
that this motion be forwarded to the Wakamow
Valley Authority
and to the City of Moose Jaw’s
Council.” The motion was seconded by Ann
Greggersen and approved by the membership.
Business
Cards and Office Supplies: Larry Going
made the motion “That the
President of Nature Moose Jaw be given the authority to purchase
necessary
office items, including business cards, to a maximum of $200 per year
without
prior approval.” Marion Tolley seconded
the motion. The motion was passed.
Fern
Dowse 75th birthday: Kim presented an art
reproduction by Phyllis Hordyski to Fern in honour of her birthday. Birthday cake was enjoyed by all.
A
slide show
presentation was given by Kathleen Donauer, General Manager of Nature Saskatchewan. She explained the role Nature Saskatchewan
plays in
conservation and education in our province. It
was a very good presentation, enjoyed by all.
This
report
was prepared by Norma Going.
September 12, 2008
Minutes - Vivian
Darroch-Lozowski
Fred Nash moved and
Marion Tolley seconded
that from now on the meetings will convene at 7:00. This motion carried.
Marion
Tolley moved and Ron Silvers
seconded the purchase of an Epson projector
from Staples for $550.00. There was
agreement that if the projector is purchased it must be for the use of
NMJ only
and kept locked in the cabinet. This motion carried.
President Kim Epp
encouraged us to bring
our own mugs back and forth for the coffee/tea, even though the other
disposable cups would still be available for use if people wished or
forgot.
Regarding
the mileage paid for speakers
when they come from out of town, Kim initiated discussion that this
could be
raised from 15 cents to at least 25 cents or more to keep it in line
with other
going rates of 30, 35, 45 cents/km. All agreed the cost of gas is
exorbitant
now and Dolly Mackin moved, seconded by George Holman that we now pay
30
cents/km for speakers’ travel. This
motion passed.
Fern
Dowse shared the information that Mr.
Len Mowchenko has undergone surgery and passed around a card for his
good
health that all members present signed hoping for his recovery.
The call
for bird sightings brought reports
of thousands of gulls, and sightings of finches, doves, robins, nut
hatches. One member reported that barn
swallows on his farm are in decline. Our
guest, Janet Ng, said these birds are in decline everywhere and it is
believed
this is because flying insects are also on decline.
A member asked whether Nature Saskatchewan was
involved as a body with these kinds of issues such as the declining
swallows. Kim indicated she would
inquire about this. There was also a
discussion of casino lights affecting bird flights. Then Kim raised the
difficulty of the frog and fish survival in the Wakamow, due to the
lowering of
the river levels by the city. Many
members knew of the city’s disregard in this matter.
That Kim write a letter on behalf of Nature
Moose Jaw about this to the city was moved by Marion Tolley and
seconded by
Fern Dowse. This motion was passed.
Kim Epp
volunteered to be the field trip co-coordinator. A
sheet was passed around for two forthcoming field trips.
October Wakamow Night
Hike on Saturday October 17
A Saskatoon Zoo visit in October.
This is to be a private
behind the
scenes visit for being close with the animals.
George
Holman indicated tickets for a Wakamow Valley
fundraiser may be obtained from
him.
After
the adjournment of the business meeting,
members took their coffee and goodies to tables and enjoyed Sheina
Wait’s
slides and expert tips about understanding the brown thrasher bird.
Sheina was followed by guest speaker Janet Ng
who described her research on the Nighthawks. Janet informed us about
nighthawks, their habitat, and her conservation fieldwork.

Our regular meeting was storm struck. The guest
speaker from Regina (Michelle Yaskowich) was unable to make it because

a visitor. New member Vivian Darroch-Lozoyski, informed us of a
new Global initiative called Earth Hour. At 8pm of March 29,
2008 everyone is asked to turn off their lights for 1 hour (earth
hour). She is asking everyone to spread the work. For more
information the Earth Hour web site is

January 11, 2008
The first speaker for the new year on will be Margaret Moran
of the Wakamow Valley Authority and the Municipal Committee On The
Environment. Her power point presentation will be "The Effects of
Water Levels On Wildlife and Habitat".
Also on the meeting program
will be two administrative initiatives to be implemented to facilitate
general administration and programming. Both of these items have
been ratified in the constitution adopted in 2006-07. These
involve the changing of the year end to June to coincide with the
fiscal period used by Nature Saskatchewan. The dates suggested
are April 11th for selection of a nominating committee; May 9th for the
election of a new board of directors; and June 8th for the final
meeting of the term to be completed at the annual pancake
breakfast. The adoption of this year end will enable the final
reports of the year by Nature Moose Jaw to be included with the final
reports of the other groups in Nature Saskatchewan's report at the
provincial Annual General Meeting in June. The new board will
then have the entire summer period for planning and scheduling.
The other initiative is the
changing of the term of office from a two-year term to a one-year term
so that the assumption of a position on the board will not require as
great a commitment.
